Jussi Ängeslevä

Meaning Making with New Media

Professor Jussi Ängeslevä is a designer, an artist and an educator. Having taught at the Berlin University of the Arts and Royal College of Arts in London, he is working with digital materiality and interaction design. His work as Creative Director at ART+COM Studios commands global recognition in media arts and exhibition design. His focus is in between fields: combining understanding of visual, physical and interaction design with algorithmic, electronic and mechatronic knowledge to create innovative and elegant experiences, where the meaning is inseparable from the medium communicating it. He now lives and works in Palo Alto, California, United States.

  • Creative Director — 2020–2023: As a member of management board, responsible for the creative team in design and research and strategic direction. Overseeing the creative concept development and execution.
  • Vice Creative Director — 2008–2020: Being responsible for large museum projects, site specific artworks, spear heading innovation in research and artistic direction in site specific art works.
  • Designer — 2004–2008: Designing innovative media installations, art works and spearheading in-house research.

  • Honorary Professor — 2011–present: Digital Media Design Professorship at the department of Visual Communication.
  • Visiting Professor — 2007–2011: Running the “Rethinking prototyping” research project alongside studio class teaching.
  • Assistant Professor — 2005–2007: Digital Media Design core faculty member writing grants, teaching the studio class and running seminars between the departments of Art and Media and Visual Communications.

  • Visiting Professor — 2011–2018: Information Experience Design programme faculty member in parallel with lecturer position at the department of Innovation Design Engineering.
